Thai food central

with 2 comments

It seems as though Church and Richmond has become the new little Thailand in Toronto. This evening as Jenna and I walked back from the grocery store, we noticed that the ground level of the building that used to house the Rockit (and the the Speakeasy) is now a Spring Rolls.

If you ask me, it’s a pretty dumb place to open a chain Thai restaurant, what with the incredible Golden Thai directly across the street, and Young Thailand just south. Not to mention an almost identical Spring Rolls restaurant half a kilometer away.

Weird.

  1. I work on Richmond, between Church and Jarvis, and I gotta tell ya, there ain’t no place to eat around here!

I eat out for lunch every day and I always have to walk to Yonge to eat at the Eaton Centre (*ugh*), or down to Adelaide/Yonge to eat in the Scotia Plaza food court (which also features a recently opened Thai place).

The only places to have a quick meal around here are Gino’s Pizza (as greasy as it sounds), the George Street Diner (which is a diner, ain’t all that close and ain’t fast), the Pizza Pizza at Church and Dundas (!) or McDonald’s (which I have sworn off of).

I’ve been to the Spring Rolls Go (the name of their fast food version, I guess) a couple of times at lunch now and it’s quick and comfy. Sure, meals are $8+ but you expect that going in (and it’s cheaper than the other two Thai restaurants, with no tipping required). They even have a small patio area if you don’t want to sit in the nicely decorated dining room (booths with tvs!).

Young Thailand? F**k that s**t, Silent Bob! They don’t take credit cards! How messed up is that? Some coworkers and I went for buffet (passable) and when they sprung that little detail on us AFTER dinner (I didn’t have cash) it came out of their tip, let me tell ya.

Yeah, that Spring Rolls seems to be in a weird place, but they’ve been advertising in the area and seem to be doing pretty good business at lunch from what I can tell. I’m sure the businesses in the area (some advertising/media-related, as well as St. Mike’s) appreciate the convenience.

But having two Spring Rolls so close? That is weird.

  2. One of my favourite places for Thai noodles is the little “food court style” place at the end of Terminal 1 in Pearson. It’s got the perfect heat - doesn’t burn your tongue, but halfway through - you sweat. It’s a perfect meal in between planes on the way home to Halifax.
